Step 7: The Post-Grad Life

Writer: Caitlin SullivanCaitlin Sullivan

Well the day has finally come. After many weeks of blog posts filled with all the advice you could ever need to get through your four years of college, you know I would never leave you all hanging without sharing some advice on how to get through life successfully after you graduate. Though, I also have not experienced the stressfulness of graduating from college and then trying to find a job or a place to live afterwards, this is something I've had on my mind a lot recently and I want to be able to share my thoughts and advice on this topic with you all.

So, I’m sure as you can already tell, this week’s blog post (my final blog post) will be all about taking on the “real world” after graduation. But first, check out this helpful article that features 10 steps that every student should take to prepare for their college graduation.

As a current senior in college, with about just one semester left, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do once I graduate a lot lately. Though, if I’m being completely honest, my mind has been all over the place with this one. Some days I feel so motivated and feel as if I have everything all planned out, whereas somedays I feel terrified and don’t want to even think about the idea of graduating in the spring.

However, I know I cannot be the only one that has ever felt this way, which is exactly why I’m here. While I obviously do not have any personal experience with graduating from college, I’ve learned a thing or two by watching my friends and family members graduate along with doing my own research. So, below you’ll find some tips and advice that revolve around how I think one should take on the post-grad life.

1. Plan Ahead: I think one of the most important things you can do is have a general idea of what you want to do after you graduate. Do you want to go straight into a career, continue your education, or take a little time off before jumping into anything? It’s vital to have a plan that’s going to work best for you so that you can be successful once you graduate and not left feeling lost.

2. Set Goals: Identifying some goals for yourself post-grad is a great way to create some structure for yourself. Coming from an environment where the entire semester was planned out for you, with due date after due date, I think its important to set some goals on what you would like to achieve to hold yourself accountable and keep you moving in the right direction.

3. Don’t Give Up: Life after graduation isn’t going to be a walk in the park and things probably aren’t always going to go your way. That’s okay though. Let every rejection or hiccup that may come your way allow you to learn from your mistakes and then give you the motivation to try harder at whatever it is you may strive for next.

I really hoped this helped! Remember that it’s completely normal to be a little nervous when it comes to the idea of graduating and entering into adulthood. If you’re still in need of some additional advice, check out this amazing article on 21 things nobody tells you when you graduate college.

Lastly, I just wanted to end off this blog series by thanking you all. Thank you to all my readers who have stuck by and supported me throughout this entire semester, I couldn’t have gotten through it without every single one of you!
