Step 6: Drinking For Less

Writer: Caitlin SullivanCaitlin Sullivan

After taking a little break last week from my typical blog posts, I'm back this week with even more advice for your common college struggles. Though this week will still be a little different from my regular posts. Instead of my classic posts, such as those that include ways to get involved at college or keeping your grades up, on this week’s blog I’ll be sharing some tips and tricks on how to drink while on a college budget!

Drinking (responsibly, of course) is a very common social activity at colleges everywhere. Though, something I have realized since I started drinking was how expensive it can be. Going out to a bar with a few of your friends for some casual drinks is all fun and games until you get your bill. It didn’t take me long to realize that I needed to start coming up with some cheaper, more reasonable alternatives to paying $10 for each drink I ordered at my university’s local bars.

But first, check out this awesome blog post written by a student from Binghampton University on ways to drink responsibly while in college.

Now, back to the drinks. The first thing that I realized when it came to drinking on a budget, was that it's simply cheaper to either buy already made drinks from the store or the supplies to make your own drink. Thankfully, due to this realization, I was given the opportunity to start experimenting in the kitchen a lot when it came to making cocktails.

Below are two of my go-to drink recipes I make at home when I’m not trying to break the bank:

Mojitos: Mojitos are my favorite drink ever. Though, when I found myself ordering specialty drinks like this at bars, I noticed my tabs would be a lot higher than usual. Anyways, I eventually realized that this drink it both an easy and cheap one to make at home. All you need is some rum (I usually purchase a brand that is on the cheaper side and it doesn’t make a difference), mint, sugar, lime, and a splash of club soda! Or if I’m feeling extra lazy, I’ll just buy a classic mojito mix and combine that with some rum and I’m good to go.

Moscow Mules: Moscow mules are probably my second favorite drink to order when I’m out and about. However, like the mojito, this drink is also relatively expensive when ordering out at a restaurant. So, once again, I headed to my computer to look up a cheap and easy way to make moscow mules at home. Luckily enough, this one is even easier to make than the mojito. All you’ll need is some vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. It’s really that simple!

So, now that I’ve shared with you my favorite specialty drink recipes I tend to make when I’m trying to cut back on spending money at the bar, even I can admit that these recipes can be a bit time consuming. My last drink recipe for this post is probably the easiest one of them all, the classic mixed drink. This is probably the one I find myself making the most often, and it’s nice because you can switch up your mixer whenever you get a little bored.

First, just grab your favorite drink, (I tend to gravitate towards either juices, such as pineapple or cranberry, or redbull) and then mix that with your favorite liquor. It’s really that simple and this one for sure won’t leave you feeling like you’ve spent too much money.

I hope my go-to drinks were able to give you some inspiration of drinks you can make when trying to save some money! If you're in need of any more ideas, check out this article that features 20 cheap drinks you can make at home.

Next week I'll be posting my last blog post of the semester. 😭 This post will be all about life after graduation, stay tuned!
